WHAT DOES AN AMERICORPS MEMBER DO?
An Americorps Member is ready to get their hands dirty and able to commit full-time to Gardeneers’ invaluable experience. During your service year, you will be placed in a handful of schools, primarily in Chicago’s South and West Sides, where you will serve alongside an experienced Gardeneers’ Garden Educator. Your role will be to assist in providing hands-on garden education for students, turning the garden into a lively classroom, while providing students with access and knowledge to living a healthy lifestyle. In addition, you will be vital in maintaining the gardens so that our gardens exude beauty in the neighborhoods we serve. Lastly, you will aide in our community volunteer days, student-run community farm stands, and monthly events!
WHO ARE YOU?
You are an individual with a passion for gardening and environmental work who is dedicated to serving Chicago's youth. While previous experience is encouraged, Gardeneers will train Americorps Members to gain the necessary gardening and educating skills. The ideal candidate has an open-mind, is punctual, and resilient.
Americorps requires all applicants be 18 years or older and a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident. Americorps also requires you pass a criminal background check and are not registered on the U.S. sex offender registry.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Each Americorps Member will receive a monthly living stipend, health benefits, the option of student loan deferment, and an education award.
Our next cohort will be from February 2020 to December 2020. This service requirement is full-time and will require you to be available some weekends.
WHAT IS AMERICORPS?
It is important to understand, this is not a job with Gardeneers. It is a year-long service opportunity, where individuals (called Americorps Members), will serve alongside Gardeneers’ Garden Educators. The Americorp program is funded in part by CNCS and Serve Illinois.
INTERESTED IN APPLYING?
We will be accepting applications for our next Americorps cohort in October 2019. Send a cover letter and resume to Alex Rosen, Program Director, at Alex@gardeneers.org with the header “Americorps Applicant.” No phone calls, please. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Position will begin February 2020.
